Marvel Cosmic Invasion PS5 Review – Tribute Games has reteamed with Dotemu to work on yet another beat-’em-up. After their success with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, Tribute Games is tackling the Marvel Universe with Marvel’s Cosmic Invasion. Though it’s another great beat-’em-up, it doesn’t add much to the genre and is also one of the more difficult ones out there.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion PS5 ReviewA Story That Doesn’t Fully Utilize The Cast

Annihilus has begun an invasion of the cosmos using his insect machine hybrid army, and it’s up to the heroes of the Marvel Universe to stop him. There isn’t a set team like the X-Men or the Avengers to tackle this threat. Instead, Tribute Games has selected a random group of characters, some well-known, others less so.

It’s an interesting set of characters, but they don’t really mesh well together. Still, I applaud the use of lesser-known characters rather than the most well-known. Using She Hulk instead of Hulk, for example, or introducing Cosmic Ghost Raider instead of the two most well-known Jonny Blaze and Robbie Reyes.

Overall, I enjoyed the set of characters, but in the game campaign, not all of them are really that important to the story. The X-Men, for example, don’t really have a role to play, and Cosmic Ghost Raider only appears in one cutscene.

A Lengthy Campaign With Various Character Challenges

The Campaign follows a full-on story with comic cutscenes and voiced characters as they present the mission to the player. The Campaign can be played with whatever characters you want, but there are three challenges for each level that require specific heroes.

These three challenges are one for each of the two party members you take, and one for an environmental challenge, such as avoiding a specific attack for the entire mission. The character challenges are specific to the said character; for example, defeating ten enemies with Captain America’s shield or throwing five enemies into traps with She-Hulk.

Completing these challenges allows you to unlock new color pallets for characters, Bios, Music Tracks, and additional info about the world and characters.

The Campaign is also quite lengthy for a beat-’em-up with over a dozen levels. Each level is also vastly different, and some feature unique mechanics, such as using Gatling gun turrets to take out enemies or riding an elevator with little room to move.

A Challenging Campaign To Play With Friends

Some have environmental hazards like Galactis shooting laser beams, absorbing the ground around you, or dropping rocks all over the screen for you to avoid. Some missions also feature some great Easter eggs that only the most diehard fans may catch on to.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion allows each player to bring in two heroes. There are four player slots, so you’re looking at eight playable characters if you plan to go in with four-player co-op local or online. This creates absolute chaos on-screen, but it also makes the game a tad too easy.

Alone, this is one of the hardest beat-’em-up’s I’ve played, with crazy difficulty spikes that seem random. Halfway through the game, I was stopped dead in my tracks for almost two days trying to defeat what I consider to be the hardest boss in the game, Venom.

After I finally defeated him, the game went forward easily again, but then again, randomly, the missions received a huge difficulty spike with flying enemies that heal everyone around them.

There are also no extra lives. Once both your characters are defeated, you have to start the mission from the beginning. Though some missions have plenty of health, others don’t provide nearly enough, forcing you to go into a boss fight with almost half your health depleted.

Plenty Of Characters And Styles To Play As

The action is fun. Each character has a unique play style that falls into three categories: Flyers, Dodges, and Blockers. The Flying characters have the most significant advantage as they can avoid almost all characters on the ground and can also avoid a lot of the traps.

The dodges are your agile characters that move quickly and have high combo attacks. They also dodge attacks as a defensive skill. The Blockers are the heavy-set characters that have low combo counts but knock enemies down more easily. These characters can block incoming attacks and parry them to stun, leaving them open to attack.

Despite this, I do wish the characters stood out more based on their abilities; for example, She-Hulk does the same amount of damage as Rocket Raccoon does. It would have been more appropriate if the stronger characters felt like they were actually strong.

Devastating Combo Attacks

Beating up on foes is a blast, and the addition of combo movies is nice. Any time while you’re pummelling bad guys, you can press the L1 button, and your partner will come in and combo away with you. Depending on what direction you’re moving, the analog stick will also indicate the combo move they pull off.

Though I love this mechanic, it also hurts it because it’s the same button to switch out your character, so instead of changing out, you’re doing combo attacks, which can lead to some unnecessary deaths when you’re looking to switch out a character low on health.

It’s also important to note that both characters can take damage during a combo attack, so that you may pile on the damage. Both of your characters will also take damage.

Arcade Mode Is Where The Fun’s At

After completing each mission, your characters gain EXP to level up. This increases their health and focus meters, allowing them to use their combo attacks and Ultimate attack. Though it’s a system from Shredder’s Revenge, it doesn’t really feel like it adds much to the game. I honestly never felt that my characters were improving.

There are two game modes: Campaign and Arcade. Arcade is where you’ll spend all of your time, as it feels more like playing an Arcade game. You go through each stage one by one with a set of lives, which is something missing from the Campaign.

You can also add modifiers to the game, like Free Play, which gives you God Mode with no Game Over Screen. Doppelgangers: Allowing more than one person to play the same character. You can even increase the number of enemies you encounter for more chaos.

Phenomenal Visuals And Great Sound Design

Once again, the visuals from a Dotemu game are spectacular. Each character is well animated, and the levels are packed with details. There is plenty of enemy variety in designs as well. At this point, when Dotemu is publishing a game, you know it’s going to be a looker.

The soundtrack is your typical heroic affair. I wish I could say it was solid enough, but it just felt like it was pretty rudimentary. The sound design, on the other hand, is excellent. Every punch and kick sounds brutal, and the constant dialogue characters have, and one-liners are great. She-Hulk is the best in this as she constantly breaks the fourth wall when she’s fighting.

The voice work also sounds like the old X-Men and Spider-Man animated series. I don’t know if this was by design, but it fits the game and the art style perfectly.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion is another fun beat-’em-up from Tribute Games and DotEmu, who have seemingly revived the much-loved genre. Cosmic Invasion is just another fun and entertaining title with plenty on offer from a lengthy campaign, plenty of Marvel villains and heroes to encounter, and some fun surprises. Still, it does have some issues that hold it back, primarily its sporadic difficulty spikes.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion is now available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.

Score 7.5The Final WordWith plenty of characters and great combat, there is a lot to love about Marvel Cosmic Invasion. The fantastic visuals and sound design shine through from Tribute Games and Dotemu. It's just a shame that the game's difficulty spikes and lack of extra lives in the campaign hold it back. Thankfully, the Arcade Mode more than makes up for the game's shortcomings, with great modifiers that let you enjoy the game however you want.
